Why Postgres is the Only Database You Need for AI

In the gold rush of 2023 and 2024, specialized vector databases were the darlings of the AI world. Startups flocked to Pinecone, Weaviate, and Milvus to handle the high-dimensional embeddings required for Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). But as we move deeper into 2026, a clear trend has emerged: Postgres is winning the AI database war.

The reason isn’t that specialized vector databases are bad, but that Postgres is “good enough” at vectors while being “infinitely better” at everything else.

The Rise of pgvector

The catalyst for this shift was pgvector. By adding vector similarity search directly into Postgres, it eliminated the need for “polyglot persistence” (maintaining two different databases for one application).

With pgvector, you can store your user data, your business logic, and your AI embeddings in the same ACID-compliant tables.

AI doesn’t live in a vacuum. Most RAG applications don’t just need the “most similar document”; they need the most similar document that the user has permission to see, that was created in the last 30 days, and corresponds to a specific department.

In a specialized vector database, you have to sync all this metadata (permissions, timestamps, categories) and then filter on it. In Postgres, it’s just a JOIN or a WHERE clause.

The ability to combine vector search with complex relational queries is the “killer feature” that makes Postgres the superior choice for enterprise AI.

As we see more AI integration directly into the database engine—like running LLM calls via extensions or automated indexing—Postgres continues to prove that “everything is better in Postgres.”

If you are starting an AI project in 2026, don’t overcomplicate your stack. Start with Postgres. It has the vectors, it has the relations, and most importantly, it has the reliability you need for production AI agents.
